'Significant snow' to blanket Scotland with return to

SNOW is set to blanket Scotland next week with a return to a recent -7C polar chill looking possible.

Temperatures across the UK are expected to plummet with another big chill in store north of the border between Monday and Thursday.

Wintry showers are set to return with snow likely to fall on lower levels.

Fresh and breezy conditions could also bring in some strong winds with a risk of gales.

Weather specialists WXCharts forecast that snow will blanket the country on Monday, January 16.

The white stuff will continue to fall across the country for the rest of the week as temperatures return to below average.

In a long range forecast, the Met Office said: "A temporary spell of milder conditions is possible across the south midweek, however by the end of the week, most areas should see a return to below average temperatures.

"These cooler conditions are likely to allow the wintry showers to return, bringing an increasing likelihood of snow across northern regions down to lower levels.

"Fresh and breezy winds are often likely, becoming stronger at times with a risk of gales."

Amateur forecaster, UK Weather Updates, said: "A change is on the way from Saturday - the mild westerlies get replaced by a more polar airmass.

"Increased risk of wintriness going into next week.

"Wouldn't rule out significant snow *for some* with the unstable flow through 16-19th."

Last month, the nation was facing the coldest Christmas for 12 years with a 1,500 mile-wide 'polar blitz' bringing a three-week chill.

The cold snap was due to a freezing storm known as the 'Troll of Trondheim' that swept in from Norway.

And temperatures dropped to as low as -10C in some parts.

Snow and ice caused huge disruption to travel in Scotland and schools had to close.
